How to fix ipad2 home button unresponsiveness issue

My ipad2 home button was intermittently becoming unresponsive. Here are various things I tried after talking to Apple support and reading up various support threads.

  1. Hard reset. For this hold power button till you see slide to power off. Then release power button and press home button immediately. This did not work for me though.
  2. Then I re-provisioned ipad2 and erased all the data. This fixed the problem for sometime. But it reappeared again.
  3. After that I pressed the ipad2 just below the home button. This fixed the problem for me. So far things have been working fine since last 3 days.
